External shading maintenance compared to air con
Proper maintenance of external shading systems is often overlooked, leading to unexpected issues and misconceptions about their reliability. Just as a car left unmaintained for a decade would inevitably develop problems, shading systems also require basic care, yet users are often unprepared for maintenance costs, unfairly discrediting the product. In reality, unlike air conditioning, which must operate continuously to be effective, external shading works passively, only activating for short periods when weather conditions change. On average, motors may run for just 2-3 minutes per day, making energy use and wear negligible.
Unlike HVAC systems, shading does not require costly annual servicing by the supplier; instead, a simple visual inspection by the owner or maintenance staff is sufficient. There’s no need for lubrication—just an occasional check for misalignment or wear. However, as commercial and high-performance buildings adopt standards like NABERS and WELL, regular reviews are becoming more important, ensuring that external shading remains a reliable and low maintenance solution.
